Behind the scenes of the web show​

If you've ever attended a big show, you know that behind the curtains are countless technicians, sound engineers, set designers and other professionals who make sure everything goes smoothly on stage. Similarly, in the digital world, back-end development is that hidden, but crucial, part that makes the show work. If the front end is the stage, the back end is the backstage.

What is back-end development?​

Back-end development, sometimes called "server-side", deals with data, servers and applications. It takes care of everything that the user does not see, but which is essential for the proper functioning of the website or application: data management, the server, databases and APIs.

How does this work?​

Let's return to our theatrical analogy:

  • Servers: These are the technicians behind the scenes. They receive requests, process them, and return appropriate responses.

  • Databases: Let's imagine them as the huge warehouses where all the props, costumes and scripts are stored. They store information so that everything can be retrieved and used at the right time.

  • API (Application Programming Interfaces): These are the coordinators, ensuring that the actors (front-end) receive what they need from the technicians (servers) and warehouses (databases).

Why is this important?​

Without a solid back-end, a website would just be an empty shell. The backend allows users to log in, save their information, make purchases, post content and much more. In short, it brings functionality to life and enables data storage and manipulation.
